Order Book vs Shopify wholesale apps
Order Book is wholesale ordering software for coffee roasters that sits next to your Shopify store, not inside it. This page sets it against the six Shopify wholesale apps roasters most often run their cafés through, for the day one of them breaks checkout again.

What can I use instead of my Shopify wholesale app?
If the app keeps breaking checkout or your theme, the fault is usually not that one app but the way every one of them works: it bolts wholesale onto a retail store with customer tags and theme code. Order Book takes wholesale out of the store altogether, so nothing installs on your shop, every plan has every feature, and there is no order cap and no fee per order.
The six apps side by side
Prices are the US dollar list prices per month on each app's Shopify App Store listing. The last column counts themes in the first ten one- and two-star reviews of each app, so it is a sample of the complaints, not the reviews as a whole.
| App | A price for one customer | Order caps and fees | What the low reviews mention most |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wholesale Gorilla 4.8 from 317 reviews | Customer price groups by tag on every plan, from $34.95. Whether a group can be one café: see their listing. Net terms and order limits from Advanced, $69.95 | None listed | Install and theme trouble (3 of 10), support (3), charged after uninstalling (2), pages left behind (2) |

What the low reviews have in common
Most reviews of these apps are five stars, and the ratings above are honest. The one- and two-star reviews are a few per cent of the total. What makes them worth reading is that the same complaints repeat across vendors and across years.
Across the low reviews of 13 Shopify wholesale apps read for this page, slow or missing support came up for 11 of them. Billing traps, such as being charged after uninstalling or having to upgrade before the basics worked, came up for 10. Checkout breaking, or the wholesale price lost at checkout, for 9. Theme breakage or code left behind after uninstalling, for 7. An update breaking what had worked, for 7. Clashes with Markets, POS, email and shipping apps or slide-out carts, for 7. Among the six above, support appears in every app's low reviews, and in six or seven of the first ten for five of them.
Why the same things break
Every app on this page adds wholesale to a store that was built for retail. A customer gets a tag, and the app changes the price your theme shows and the price the checkout charges for anyone carrying that tag. The wholesale price therefore lives in places other people change: your theme, Shopify's checkout, and the other apps in the cart.
- A theme update or a new theme drops the app's snippet, and wholesale customers see retail prices.
- A discount app, a slide-out cart or Markets touches the same cart, and the wholesale price is lost at checkout.
- Uninstalling removes the app but not always its code or its pages, so the theme keeps the leftovers.
- The vendor ships a fix for one store's theme, and it breaks on the next one. Support then has to debug your theme before it can debug the app.
None of this is one vendor's carelessness. It is the cost of the layer, and moving to another app on this page moves you to the same layer.
Where these apps are stronger
- One catalog and one checkout. Retail and wholesale are the same products in the same admin, and stock is shared with retail. Order Book keeps its own count of roasted stock and does not share inventory with your Shopify store.
- Card payment at checkout. A trade buyer pays like any shopper. Order Book does not process payments: cafés pay by transfer on your terms, recorded against the account, or an order is marked as paid.
- A storefront. Buyers who like to browse photography and fill a basket get your theme on your domain. Order Book gives a café its own list, which is quicker but is not a shop.
- Cheap entry tiers. BSS has a free plan, and Wholesale Helper starts at $24.99. If one wholesale price for everyone is enough, that is less than Order Book's €49.
- A public sign-up form for trade buyers. Most of these apps have one. In Order Book, cafés arrive by invitation from the roastery.
- Shopify POS. Bold's Complete plan and Wholesale Helper's Global plan carry wholesale prices into POS.
Where Order Book is different
- Nothing installs on your shop. No theme code, nothing in the checkout, nothing to clash with your cart, and nothing to uninstall. Order Book can read your products and order history once through a Shopify custom app your store already had before 2026, and it never writes back. Without one, clients and orders come in by CSV.
- Every plan has every feature. A price for each café is not a higher tier: each client type has a catalog, and each café can have its own overrides and volume breaks.
- No order cap and no fee per order. The plans are €49, €149 and €249 a month and count clients, 20, 100 or unlimited. A busy week costs the same as a quiet one.
- A café sees only its own prices because the account is its own, not because a tag was read correctly. Cafés sign in with the address you already hold, with no password.
- Leaving is a download. An admin can export everything the organisation holds as one file at any time, and orders also export as CSV.
The longer argument for keeping retail on Shopify and wholesale off it is in Shopify wholesale for coffee roasters. If you are weighing Shopify's own B2B instead of an app, see Order Book vs Shopify B2B.
Can you use both?
Yes, and that is the usual shape. Shopify keeps retail: the store, the theme, the consumer subscriptions, the stock. The wholesale app comes out, and your cafés move to Order Book, each with its own prices. Leaving your wholesale app walks through exporting customers and prices, importing them, inviting the cafés and removing the code the app leaves in your theme.
Some roasters keep a wholesale app for a few trade buyers who find them online and want to pay by card, and move the cafés they deliver to every week into Order Book. That is a reasonable place to stop.
App details are taken from the public Shopify App Store listings and their one- and two-star reviews, read on 8 October 2026, and may have changed. Review counts come from a sample of each app's low reviews. If something here is out of date, write to [email protected] and it will be corrected.
